Andrea Orcel: the complete biography of the manager leading the UniCredit Group [1]
Origins and education
Andrea Orcel was born in Rome in 1963 to a family of Sicilian, Tuscan, and French descent. His father managed a small leasing company and his mother worked for the UN. He attended the Lycée français Chateaubriand in Rome, where he learned French in addition to Italian. He graduated with honors in economics and commerce from Sapienza University of Rome with a thesis on hostile takeovers and then attended the INSEAD business school in Fontainebleau, France.
Andrea Orcel's career and rise in the banking sector
In 1988, at the age of 25, Orcel was hired by the American investment bank Goldman Sachs to work in their Fixed Income division in London. A year later, he left the company to work as a Senior Consultant at Boston Consulting Group from 1989 to 1992 in the corporate restructuring and strategy department in Paris.
Career at Merrill Lynch
In 1992, he joined Merrill Lynch & Co (acquired in 2009 by Bank of America to create Bank of America Merrill Lynch) in the Financial Institutions Group (FIG) in London. In 1998, Orcel orchestrated the merger of two Italian banking groups, Credito Italiano and Unicredito Italiano, to form UniCredit, the largest bank in Italy. The following year, he personally closed the merger of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya and Argentaria to create BBVA, the second largest bank in Spain. Orcel became head of Global FIG from 2003 to 2007 and then head of Global Origination from 2007 to 2012. During his career at Merrill Lynch, Orcel was involved in some of the largest M&A transactions in the financial sector, including the acquisition of ABN Amro by a consortium led by the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2007, the sale of Fortis to BNP Paribas in 2009, and the merger between Intesa Sanpaolo and Banca IMI in 2011.
Career at UBS
In 2012, Orcel left Merrill Lynch to join UBS as co-president of the Investment Bank division alongside Carsten Kengeter. In November 2014, he became the sole president of the division after Kengeter's resignation. Under his leadership, UBS Investment Bank focused on advisory and wealth management activities, reducing exposure to trading and equity markets. Orcel managed to improve the profitability and reputation of the division, bringing UBS to the top of global M&A and IPO rankings. Among Orcel's clients are major banking groups such as Santander, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, and Barclays.
Career at Santander
In September 2018, Orcel accepted the offer to become CEO of Banco Santander, the largest bank in the eurozone by market capitalization. However, in January 2019, Santander announced that it was withdrawing Orcel's appointment due to difficulties in reaching an agreement with UBS regarding the deferred bonus that Orcel was supposed to receive from the Swiss bank. Orcel then decided to sue Santander for breach of contract, seeking compensation of over 100 million euros.
Joining UniCredit
In January 2021, it was announced that Orcel was the favored candidate to succeed Jean Pierre Mustier as CEO of UniCredit, the Italian banking group he helped create in 1998. On January 27, 2021, the board of directors of UniCredit appointed Orcel as the new CEO, effective April 15, 2021. Orcel aims to revive the growth and profitability of UniCredit, focusing on core activities in Italy and Europe and considering potential M&A operations.
Private life
Orcel lives in London with his wife Clara Batalim-Orcel, a Portuguese interior designer, and their daughter. He has a husky puppy named Flash. He speaks five languages fluently: Italian, French, English, German, and Spanish. He is known for his preference for Salvatore Ferragamo silk ties and for his exercise regimen, which includes high-intensity running, weight training, and water skiing. His younger brother, Riccardo, is also an investment banker and has worked with Andrea at Merrill Lynch and VTB Bank.
