Alstom is a French industrial group active in the railway infrastructure and train construction sector.[1]
Alstom in the industrial sector
Alstom operates in the field of train construction and railway infrastructure, particularly in the production of rolling stock and signaling. It is the manufacturer of the TGV and AGV trains.
Alstom: the birth in 1928 as "Alsthom"
Alstom, originally Alsthom, is the result of the merger of part of SACM (Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques) and Compagnie française Thomson-Houston (CFTH). This merger took place in 1928. The first president was Auguste Detoeuf. In 1976, Compagnie générale d'électricité (CGE) acquired Alsthom and in 1988 it partnered with General Electric Company (GEC).
Alstom: the current composition occurred in 1989
Alstom in its current form originated on June 22, 1989, through a joint venture established by GEC and Alcatel called GEC-Alsthom. The two parent companies, aiming to focus on their core production sectors, decided to sell a majority of 52% on the stock market, retaining 24% each of GEC-Alsthom. The new company achieved great success in the operation and became independent in 1998, adopting the current name Alstom.
Joint ventures and divestitures
In 1999, Alstom created a joint venture with ABB: named ABB Alstom Power, the company specialized in the field of power generation systems. Subsequently, Alstom took full control of it. In 2001, Alstom sold 24% of its shares, and then in January 2004, it sold its transmission and distribution business to Areva. In 2005, Alstom sold its Power Conversion (power electronics) business to Barclays Private Equity.
Alstom today
In 2017, Alstom announced its merger with Siemens Mobility (the rolling stock sector of the German conglomerate Siemens AG): the operation took place on March 23, 2018, with the birth of the new company Siemens Alstom. On July 17, 2018, Alstom's shareholders approved the merger with Siemens. On February 6, 2019, the operation was blocked by the European Commission. In July 2019, Alstom publicly presented a new brand identity and the new slogan "Mobility by nature."
