Giuseppe Castagna is an experienced Italian executive in the banking sector, since 2017 the CEO of Banco BPM [1]
Origins and education
Giuseppe Castagna was born in Naples in 1959. He graduated in Law from Federico II University of Naples in 1984. His professional career began a year before his graduation, when he joined the Banca Commerciale Italiana (Comit). He spent 33 years in Comit, then in Intesa Sanpaolo, holding various positions of responsibility in commercial and credit areas.
Management of Banco di Napoli
In 2007, Castagna became the general manager of Banco di Napoli, one of Italy's historic banks, controlled by Intesa Sanpaolo. Under his leadership, Banco di Napoli strengthened its presence in the South, increasing market share and profitability. Castagna also promoted social and cultural responsibility initiatives, such as the restoration of Palazzo Ricca, the bank's historic headquarters, and support for the Banco di Napoli Foundation for Minor Assistance.
Delegate advisor and general manager of Banca Popolare di Milano
In January 2014, Castagna left Intesa Sanpaolo and became the delegate advisor and general manager of Banca Popolare di Milano (BPM), one of the largest Italian cooperative banks. His goal was to relaunch the bank, which had suffered heavy losses in the previous years due to the financial crisis and non-performing loans. Castagna initiated a restructuring plan that included cost reduction, strengthening the commercial network, enhancing capital, and selling non-strategic assets. Thanks to these measures, BPM returned to profitability in 2015 and improved its capital solidity indicators.
CEO of Banco BPM
In July 2016, Castagna was one of the main architects of the merger between BPM and Banco Popolare, which created the third largest banking group in Italy by assets, named Banco BPM. The merger was finalized on January 1, 2017, and Castagna became its CEO. His task was to implement the 2016-2019 industrial plan, which aimed to create synergies between the two banks, reduce exposure to non-performing loans, increase profitability, and return to dividend payments. Over the years, Castagna successfully carried out the integration process between the two banks, achieving the set objectives and gaining recognition from the market and shareholders.
Interests and social commitment
He is passionate about sports, especially swimming. He is also a lover of art and culture and has contributed to supporting various cultural initiatives promoted by Banco BPM, such as the restoration of La Scala Theatre in Milan and the sponsorship of the Venice Biennale.
