Luigi Ferraris: the Italian manager leading the transformation of Ferrovie dello Stato towards sustainability and digitalization [1]
Education and early career
Luigi Ferraris was born in Legnano on February 23, 1962. He graduated in Political Economy from the University of Genoa and in 1988 joined PriceWaterhouse as an auditor. In the following years, he worked in business management in various sectors, including aeronautics, transport, beverages, and industrial automation, working for Agusta, Piaggio VE, Sasib Beverage, and Elsag Bailey Process Automation.
Experience in the satellite communications sector
In 1998, he became Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Elsacom, a company of the Finmeccanica Group operating in the field of satellite communications. He held this position until 2001, when he moved to Enel.
Career at Enel
At Enel, Ferraris held various positions of responsibility, from managing planning and control to group CFO since 2009. During this time, he was also president of Enel Green Power, the company dedicated to renewable energy, which he led to an IPO. In his last year at Enel, he took on the role of head of the Latin America area and CEO of Enersis S.A., the Chilean company of the group.
Role at Poste Italiane and Terna
In February 2015, he left Enel and became CFO of the Poste Italiane Group, where he oversaw the company's IPO. He is also a board member of Banca del Mezzogiorno-Mediocredito Centrale and ERG. In 2017, he was appointed CEO and general manager of Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid. He held this position until May 2020.
Appointment as head of Ferrovie dello Stato
On May 26, 2021, Ferraris became CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, succeeding Gianfranco Battisti. His appointment came after being chosen as a councilor by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Academic activity and awards
Ferraris is a professor of Corporate Strategy at Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome. He also teaches Planning and Control, Management Control Systems, and Energy Management in the MBA program at the same university. He has received several awards for his managerial activity, including the Manager Utility 2010 and Manager Utility 2018 in the energy sector, and the Tiepolo Award 2022 for his contribution to improving economic and commercial relations between Italy and Spain.
