Alberto Nagel is an Italian banker and manager, current CEO of Mediobanca. [1]

Origins and education

Alberto Nagel is the son of Ludovico Nagel, known as Franco, a lawyer from Barletta with German ancestry, and Fortuna Giannone, originally from the same city. He has a sister named Erica Nagel. He graduated from the classical high school at the Istituto Leone XIII in 1984 and earned a degree in Business Administration from Bocconi University in Milan in 1990.

Career at Mediobanca

Alberto Nagel joined Mediobanca in 1991 and has remained there throughout his career, holding various roles and responsibilities. He started in the Financial Services, then moved to the General Secretariat, of which he became Head in 1997. Subsequently, he took on the responsibility of the Investment Banking Division. He was promoted to Officer in 1995, Central Director in 1998, Deputy General Manager in 2002, and General Manager in 2003. In 2007, he became Managing Director and in 2008, a position he still holds today. In the 1990s, he was involved in the Italian privatizations followed by Mediobanca, including those of Enel (1999), BNL (1998), and Finmeccanica (2000). He also participated in significant Italian M&A operations, such as the takeover bid of Credito Italiano on Credito Romagnolo ('94/'95), the takeover bid of Olivetti on Telecom Italia ('99), and the takeover bid of Generali on INA ('00/'01). He also followed the consolidation process of Italian cooperative banks.

Industrial plan and business development

In 2004, Alberto Nagel presented the first industrial plan of Mediobanca as General Manager. In 2013, he presented the three-year strategic plan 2014-2016, which achieved a new balance between business diversification and economic results. Under his leadership, Mediobanca's Corporate & Investment banking expanded into foreign markets with openings in Paris (2004), Moscow and Luxembourg (2005), Frankfurt, Madrid, and New York (2007), London (2008), and Istanbul (2013).

At the same time, he initiated the development of the retail hub of the Mediobanca Group. This includes the acquisition of Linea by Compass in 2007, the launch of CheBanca! in 2008, the retail bank of the Group and an online bank in Italy, and the acquisition of a perimeter of retail activities from Barclays Italy in 2015. In 2015, he also launched the Alternative Asset Management business with the acquisition of a controlling stake in Cairn Capital, a London-based credit asset manager.

In 2016, Alberto Nagel presented the three-year strategic plan for 2019. The plan aims to develop Wealth Management in synergy with Corporate Investment Banking. In this context, the total acquisition of Banca Esperia was announced by Nagel along with the plan, which aims to offer private banking services to high-net-worth individuals.

Personal life

Alberto Nagel is married and has two children. He lives in Italy and travels between Milan and London, where he works part of the week.
