Catia Bastioli is an Italian researcher, chemist, and entrepreneur, currently the CEO of Novamont, an Italian leader in the field of bioplastics. [1]
Origins and Education
Born in Foligno in 1957, Catia Bastioli has always been interested in chemistry and the natural world. Bastioli attended the Business Management School at Bocconi University and graduated in chemistry from the University of Perugia. She began her career as a researcher for the largest research group in Italy, Montedison, where she utilized her expertise in chemistry to develop bioplastics from agricultural waste and raw materials. At Montedison, she helped establish a research center that later became Novamont. With the transition to Novamont, Bastioli began to focus on experimenting with eco-friendly materials and bioplastics. Bastioli now serves as the CEO of Novamont, as well as the president of Terna Spa of the Kyoto Club Association and a member of the Board of Directors of Fondazione Cariplo. She was also the CEO of Matrìca, a joint venture between Novamont and Versalis.
Research and Innovation
With her extensive academic and professional experience in the field of bioplastics and renewable raw materials, Bastioli is an active investor and inventor. With a passion for sustainability and the environment, she has identified a problem that modern innovations face regarding their impact on the environment. With this issue in mind, she set out to develop a systematic approach to add value to an innovative product while reducing its environmental harm. Believing that science and technology can improve lives, she has experimented with the development of various bioplastics. Bastioli has published over 40 articles and is listed as an inventor on over 150 patents.
Bastioli is the primary inventor of about 80 families of patents in both synthetic and natural polymers, as well as in the processing of renewable raw materials. In fact, the European Patent Office and the European Commission awarded her the title of "European Inventor of the Year 2007" for her inventions in starch-based bioplastics. She was also named Person of the Year by Bioplastic News in 2017 for her work. Through her innovations and awards, she remains committed to addressing real problems faced by society.
Social Impact
Bastioli's work in the field of bioplastics has had a lasting impact on today's society. The focus has always been on the pain point of modern innovations that negatively affect the environment. This is highlighted by her work on a revolutionary bioplastic product, Mater-Biopolymer. Mater-Bi, or a family of bioplastic polymers created from plant-based raw materials, has uses not only to replace traditional plastic but also to preserve natural resources and thus reduce environmental impact. With an ecodesign approach, Mater-Bi also addresses issues with waste collection management and agricultural dispersion environments. This is currently aimed at solving soil degradation and greenhouse gas emission problems by creating more fertile soil through organic matter and decarbonizing the atmosphere. With the use of this innovative product, pollution from traditional plastics can be reduced, and the pain point being experienced can be addressed. With the combination of entrepreneurship and chemistry, Catia Bastioli has been transformative as a leader in the bioplastics space.
Awards and Recognitions
Catia Bastioli has received numerous awards and recognitions for her inventions and entrepreneurial activities in the field of bioplastics and renewable raw materials. Among the most significant are:
- In 2007, she was named European Inventor of the Year by the European Patent Office for her inventions related to starch-based bioplastics;
- In 2008, she received an honorary degree in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Genoa;
