Roberto Cingolani is an Italian physicist and business executive, currently the CEO of Leonardo. [1]
Roberto Cingolani was born in Milan on December 23, 1961, the son of physicist Aldo Cingolani, a full professor of physics at the University of Bari. He spent his childhood in the Apulian capital, where he graduated in physics in 1985. He obtained his PhD at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa in 1990.
Academic Career
From 1988 to 1991, he collaborated with the Max Planck Society located in Stuttgart, Germany, under the guidance of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Klaus von Klitzing.
Between 1991 and 1999, he held various academic roles, progressing from researcher to associate professor in general physics at the University of Salento, then known as the University of Lecce. During the years 1997-2000, he was a visiting lecturer at both the University of Tokyo in Japan and Virginia Commonwealth University in the USA.
In the five-year period from 2000 to 2005, he served as a full professor of general physics at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Salento. Here he also founded and managed the National Laboratory of Nanotechnology in Lecce.
In 2001, he acted as an expert consultant for the Prosecutor's Office of Rome, preparing technical reports for cases known as those of Marta Russo and the Unabomber.
Since the end of 2005, he has served as the scientific director at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) based in Genoa, where he also assumed responsibilities comparable to those of a CEO.
In 2015, he was awarded the Premio Roma for Science, in recognition of his significant impact on the research landscape, thanks to the Italian Institute of Technology. He combined scientific expertise, management skills, and administrative ethics. The following year, in 2016, he was one of the key figures in the establishment of the Human Technopole in Milan, a research institution focused on biology.
Career in the Private Sector
From 2019 to 2021, he was Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Leonardo S.p.A., an Italian company leader in the aerospace, defense, and security sectors. Prior to this, he was the scientific director of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa from 2005 to 2019.
On April 12, 2023, the Italian government appointed him as the next CEO of Leonardo S.p.A. On May 9, the Board of Directors of Leonardo appointed him CEO and General Manager.
Political Career
In February 2021, he was appointed Minister of Ecological Transition in the Draghi government (2021-2022), as an independent. His ministry deals with environmental, energy, and climate policies, aiming to promote sustainable development and reduce emissions.
In October 2022, he left the ministry to become an energy advisor to the Meloni government.
